A week past by

We had been busy and not so this week again. But, alhamdulillah we do get things done as usual. Everybody did quran reading as usual routine everyday. Also they did their ad duha arabic except Thursday and today. They also been doing more worksheet on mindsprinting and PS had do more on her workbook.

PS still on Decimal-Fraction on mindsprinting Maths. She moved to Year 8 on English Comprehension now. She also been doing lots on Science and also biology workbook which she love so much.

MS still on multiplication. Alhamdulillah, yesterday I was trying new games on one website of multiplication. He fast as me! I just can't believe it. Even hubby got master degree in Engineering, and is a Design Engineer, I am quicker than him when it's come to calculate in my head. MS always a slow one which I'm always thinking because his prolong jaundice. But, after hundreds of question he had done, may be reach thousand now from mindsprinting, he just as quick as me. It's just something that I love. Train our brain to be think quick. He never did his workbook on English for quiet sometimes as I hold it for a while as I need to sit and check what he been doing in it. He did some worksheet I print. MS also did lots on Geography of street map and world map. All from Enchanted Learning. When I start to make lap book with them, I decided to subscribe Enchanted Learning and it's giving me a lots of ideas and help to make lap book.

S had a hard time in Maths. She started to learn about rounding in hundreds and thousand and millions and didn't seems to get on with it well. It take my patient away on Monday, and as hubby at home, on my side, he said to S, " Let me teach you. I had 7 years experience of teaching". Oh yes! HE do have diploma of Teaching after his Engineering Diploma. And was teaching in Polytechnic for 7 years. Than he started to read S worksheet and can't really understand at first. I let him get on with it and he was asking me what is the relevant of learning this! I was like, "Just shut up and get on with it". So, S did stay with him and only did Maths on Monday, the whole day. She did others subject the next day and manage to get her to do some science lap book on leaf topic. Also from Enchanted Learning. It's a good site for lap booking which we can just print the sheet out and let the children get on with it. On Thursday we started to do lap book on prayer.

AS also did some lap book apart from his mindsprintings worksheet. He's on counting and recognizing thousand, ten thousands, hundreds thousand, millions, ten million. I thought it's gonna be hard on him so I hold the worksheet since last weeks until I can have sometime for him. But, after the first page, he seems to get on with it on his on very well, which surprise me, but I feel glad of course. He also did find English worksheet on mindsprinting getting harder. When I told him to start doing his English worksheet he said," I'm not good at it anymore". Its sound frustrated. It is getting harder as he need to fill in two empty place on one sentence and choose words from the box. The box got twenty words and it's only five sentence altogether. It does give him a headache and I'm not letting him giving up. After 2 sets of lesson, than the worksheet become easier for him. He now can also answer complete comprehension on his own by putting the words together and understand the story. I had to say, mindsprinting was doing amazing job on this. We also did some lap book about my father, my mother and all about me. One in each day, alhamdulillah. As a boy, lap book is not much of him. So I did the cutting and gluing. He did the drawing, colouring and writing, alhamdulillah. I'm also stop him on Ad duha and just make him review and recap and memorise what he been learning which is colour, number and start with shapes now. We also been reading tafsir from ad duha which he did most of the reading himself on surah Fatihah and surah An Nas. The book been design as the children as 5 can read it.

Overall it has been a good week. I know I had freak out about lap book before but as stubborn me, still have a guts to give it a go still. Enchanted Learning had motivate me and boost my morale up, alhamdulillah. We doing lots on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We off today as we not at home. Alhamdulillah it has been a good three days and a good weeks overall. Looking forward for next week but not on Monday as I will have guests coming.

Not so much but OK.

Today, has been 'not so much but OK day'. Whenever I'm not being so busy, which not so much visitor this one and two weeks, I been lazy and my body had move less than when I was busy. The result, when I nerly having monthly period, it will hit me hard. Sleepy and tired most of time surrounded me every single minute.

This morning, I decided to have a nap after hubby off to work. I been cook last night before hubby back from his diving course means I'm already have food for today. I have a good 2 hours sleep, alhamdulillah. As a result, we start homeschool a bit late. As we need to stop for zhor, asr and magrib prayer, also for lunch, we don't really do much as we always did whenever we back into homeschool routine. But, it's OK rather than nothing.

Quran reading for everybody as usual.

Than..

AS:

Ad duha on number 11 and 13 of pronounciation and writing in arabic. Also learning circle and square in arabic. Alhamdulillah he get on so well.

As I never get a chance to print his mindsprinting worksheet, I let him off today with learning and print him a sheet to colour.

S:

Ad duha on writing the letter ro' and zal' and recognise the word on begining, alone, middle and end. Learn to write the letter and also how to join it with other letter. Get on pretty well and get lots of exercise in every lesson.

Done English comprehension test from primary resource. Maths worksheet from mindsprinting of 'nearest to'. Get on with it easy peasy for her, alhamdulillah.

MS:

Ad duha on review the lesson of sukoon, shuddah and hamzatul-wasi. Lots of memorising words in arabic. REad the ayat with the symbol. Write the ayat from quran and recognise the symbol. Start on lesson on recohnising the letter without symbol. Means teach how to write the letter in arabic without any symbol on it. Alhamdulillah it has been a good program and it's worth every penny spend on it.

Did Maths worksheet from mindsprinting. Still on multiplication. Done it in short time as before. Not as a day before as he took ages to finish it. Also comprehension from mindsprinting.

PS:

Making her memorisation book to put all her vocabulary in it that she learn from ad duha and need to be memorise. Up to now she had learnMukhruj ( how letter are pronounce), Shamsee letter (sun letter), Qamaree letter moon letter), Mudd Arith (the mudd of stopping), Sukoon Itlaaq ( Sukoon of release) and Meem and Noon Mooshuddud (with shuddah). On all this lesson it has clear explanation on tajweed rules, reading practice, writing practice, vocabulary list, vocabulary practice, translation of words, matching the words with meaning and find the ayat from quran. After every three lesson there's one review on all the topics learn. It's very satisfying program, alhamdulillah. Especially for English speaking and non arabic background.

PS had lots of worksheet from mindspriting today. All about converting decimal to fraction. She already know it, but she need to strengthen them before moved to another topic. Did comprehension from mindspriting and write a poem. A scary one.

Overall it has been an OK day. Hopefully tomorrow we will be more effective and get to do another subject and more from workbook as well. I'm already got everything priting out today which should be ready for tomorrow mindsprinting work. I just need to prepare something for other subject. So, quiet happy for tomorrow and hopefully Allah make it easy for us.

Lap booking day

Lap booking day. May be that's the right words for us today. We happen to be doing lap book the whole day today. No mindsprinting at all as we had one hour without power which I thought gonna be more longer. Time past by, leaving me busy doing lap booking with them until hubby nearly come home.

PS started doing her lap book about Islam in Egypt. She was asking to do that as S was doing lap book about Egypt. Bu, S was only doing it with the fact of whatever they learn in primary curriculum. I told PS, she already done her primary in school and learn everything about it, but she said she didn't learn much.

I said to her, "Well, you don't learn much in school with UK curriculum in History and Geography".

Unfortunately UK curriculum in school was too little and the time that was spent on it was too long in order to gain small knowledge. And I believe that's what happened to us today! Lap booking had taken so much time and I ended up not having more time on others especially to check children work and print another lesson out as hubby used the laptop last night. I wasn't bother of course to get my self in to study room for our desk top.

MS still on his dinosaur lap book and finish it today. AS was on lap book about house which I think nice and good information for him, but again taking too long of my time as I have to stop for pray, cook, eat and help S and MS as well to get on and help PS to find some info.

At the end of the day, I was tired out and ready to lay down after hubby went back from work and eat. That's our day today which I find not so satisfied from my view. We learn too little and make too much mess at the end. We did quran reading as usual and ad duha arabic, alhamdulillah. Apart from that I may have to leave the lapbooking for may be once or twice a months. It's a great way of learning of course. But, with three grow up children which need to have more serious learning to boost their brain, and with me single handed to cope with everybody, I out my hands up and think that we will do it once in a while. Not all the time. I just don't have time to be patient and help nearly 3/4 of AH lap booking and help for S lap booking and get more info for MS lap booking get tired at the end and manage to do only one subject with them for the whole day.

Or may be next time I have to be more efficient in organising everything whenever we happen to call it lap booking week! I'm tired out and still don't have time to up load picture just yet!

We back!

After a week of holiday as we celebrate eid, this week we back with our homeschool routine. Monday, we went to Museum and Winter Garden in Sunderland. It was nice day out and it's just for us to refresh our self back into learning after busy week on eid, alhamdulillah.

Yesterday, alhamdulillah we back to our routine slowly but sure. Children been sleeping in family room. May be because the room is in the middle between lounge and kitchen, it just so cosy. Rather than children room up stair which is at the corner or the house. Especially PS room got two big window. Which I was thinking to put blind to help keep the room warm, but never did. As last week eid gathering in my house, I had clear my lounge and bring my arabian style sofa in the family room as well. As that, I never bring it back in front. If we about to sit in the lounge for homeschool, the plain light pink carpet in the lounge is so easy to get dirty. At the end, it left mess in the lounge and family room as family room always been used for eating and chill out. So, I decided to keep the sofa at the moment in the family room as for my comfy sitting and hubby whenever he come back from work. So, this room now become sleeping room for children, classroom for our homeschool and dining room as always! Hemm..we have big study room and children have their own bedroom, but in this winter time, we just have to squeeze in one cosy room only. Plus, I don't have to light the fire and waste money on firelighter, charcoal and stick anymore for the fire in the lounge whenever it's too cold. As we set our central heating on timer, I don't think I can afford to run it all day long. It's already run for good 9 hours everyday!

So family room now become everything! Yesterday morning, the first thing is to tidy up all the duvet and pillow of course. Have breakfast and PS and MS start doing their chores; tidy up family room, clean bathroom and toilet, laundry and wash up whatever left over from breakfast in the kitchen. While I 'setting up' our classroom in family room. Bring all the books, plastic drawer which contain my paperwork, children worksheet and art and craft paper and stuff. Also dictionary and some of resource tools such as cube and coins. Also set up our lower table for studying.

We start with quran reading, than arabic book. After that we do our minds printing worksheet which I'm already prepare a week a go. As we have to stop for zhor and asr prayer and lunch, I don't give other workbook rather than their mind printing worksheet accept PS. She did her geography and history from her workbook. AS did lapbook of pirate as he like anything with pirate feature. We not actually learning about pirate, but, the lap book is more about words, spelling and draw map. I was inspired with labbook from Always learning resource. S also start doing lapbook about Egypt and MS doing lapbook about dinosaur as he always love dinosaur.

We had to stop around although we not finish our lapbook yet. MS as always taking too long on his Maths worksheet whenever he left them for couple of days. He just someone who need constant exercise. For the first time, children join the club in the library. Well, it's their first activity apart from Saturday school since we homeschool. I'm always wanted to get children to join some activities such as swimming, karate and etc, but with financial constrain plus where we live is not much going on, we had to hold it on at the moment. Hopefully they can start swimming and karate lesson for MS and AS next year which will be hold at the town next to us. I had to see the schedule and plan it first as it will take my time to have to bring them and pick them up.

As the first day back to our homeschool, I did feel satisfied. Children already know their responsibility and what to do and to get ready themselves whenever I ask them to. I just let them know what time we gonna start and remind their chores. And alhamdulillah it seems easy and smoothly back to normal.

It's always nice when children know what the plan is, and know their responsibility and chores. Also PS can help to instruct and watch and reminds her siblings in their responsibility. For me, it's a big release to see how the children had grow up and know their responsibilities and what to do. It's really taken half of my job away and I hope and pray that they continue to do so in their future life.

I will post the work we been doing sometimes before and yesterday soon, Insya Allah.

AS and arabic colour

Two weeks ago we went to car boot sale. While we were walking, suddenly I heard AS was saying, "that's asfar". And I heard MS was asking AS, "What is blue?". As was talking about the colour he saw in variety things in car boot sale. And MS start asking him about the colour in arabic.

The first step in learning arabic from Ad Duha program was recognise the colour and numbers in arabic. AS done 1 to ten in writing the number and saying the number in arabic. Also at the same time, learning 9 different colour in arabic. I just follow the book page by page, lesson by lesson without intention to get much from it. But, alhamdulillah it's not just the knowledge I'm into. But to bring the knowledge into practice. S and MS keep saying to me, we don't learn about colour. Because they start with upper level than AS as the lower level is too easy for them even they don't know yet. It's lots of colouring and writing the numbers only. I told them to just learn it from AS.

It's nice to see how the children put what they learn into practise. That's what I love in term of learning. It's not worth knowing a lots but can't bring them into practice. This is what happen back in my country in Malaysia. The level of curriculum in Malaysia was very high from here in UK. We have so much general knowledge especially in term of history and Geography. But, we can only assemble things. Not in term of design or bring what we learn practically. Most of people in Malaysia was so intelligent and have sharp mind, but we can't make things and turn it into profit.

Lot's of University in Malaysia win a design competition among university around the world. But, it just end there, unfortunately. Now, as I being homeschool kids here in UK and having them in UK curriculum before, I can now pick and mix my experience of education in Asia with the system which my kids did get into before in UK. Although I'm not the expert in education nor a qualified one, but experience did teach me a lots and I'm still learning. The best thing now as I'm homeschool, I can get as much resource I want, try and error, and gather things and pick and mix them to bring the best out of it. I just love homeschool...!!!!

Celebration mood

We still on celebration mood. after 2 weeks really tough on homeschool, and as Eid been celebrate on Monday, we still on celebration mood. Today, as the weather seems nice outside, I plan to bring children to the library. but, also thinking of going out to seaside or window shopping. Or also thinking about tidy up the garden. Huh! Too much thinking.

We probably take it easy this week. Think to get some worksheet about hajj done. But, feel like too many things to do also all this week. Anyway, if not sometimes this week, we will definitely back on homeschool track next week, Insya Allah. It's nice to had a break and I reckon next week homeschool will be something that we all will be looking forward!

Happy Eid to everybody!

Organise

I'm trying to start to be more organise now. I think I just come to the term where I'm back to normal routine. Well, at least at the moment. After nearly two weeks without disruption, and as cold weather approach we only stay home most of the time, we seems to get back to normal as much as we can.

Our homeschool had been progress a lots with minds printing. We try and work hard to do as much as we can and go through lesson by lesson. Because we always and might have unexpected even which we don't know when, I take this opportunity with out interrupted time to get on with children homeschool. I'm also introduce a rewards system, which if my kids get on with all their task properly, listen and not disturb other or get disturb ( which they love to chat to each others a lots and always disturb others with their learning), they seems to concentrate more especially AS. If they get all tick on their task and how they need to behave while we homeschool, they will get to choose one sweet in my sweety box. Seems like unhealthy, but it's one small tiny but interesting sweet. I plan to dry fruit as well later sometimes. The rewards system seems work well now. AS won't moved from his sit until he finish all his task which give me kind of trouble in a way. Because his mindsprinting worksheet getting harder and harder and required me to give him attention more than before.

AS worksheet for English started to include basic comprehension which now required him to write the full answers after he read the short story attached. He find it hard at first but get a grip on it now, alhamdulillah. He seem had moved forward quickly and now I plan to probably stop for a while his mindsprinting worksheet and concentrate on islamic studies for him. He also now in a way on memorise Surah Yaseen from his mp3 as that's what he wants. I plan to start work with him on islamic stories as he now can answer simple comprehension and read more difficult words. He can also start doing islamic quiz in the computer as his reading had moved forward. I can now leave the formal learning of his English and Maths from mindsprinting and give him a bit of fun learning. Although he love the worksheet so much.

AS also had finish his first book of Arabic which contain 2 unit. He had learn colour and numbers in arabic up to ten which he did learn before. We than make a lapbook together about number up to ten and six colours in arabic. Picture will coming soon. I will resume his arabic till another week now. He got ten unit all together before he can go to the next level which is what S was doing which also means I need to order another set of book. But that will not happen until sometimes next year, Insya Allah.

S also had moved forwards on her Maths to the next topic which is estimating and rounding. She already learn that, but with mindprinting she will now learn and straighten the topic from basic which is on two numbers to millions before she can moved to the next one. On English, she also start doing lots of verbs, synonym and nouns also pronunciation in her English with mindsprinting worksheet. A lots of reading from comprehension worksheet, alhamdulillah. We will also slowly doing other subject later. She also did some science.

In her Arabic book, she now finish her first chapter which is to recognise the words from the ayat. Which is to recognise the words in arabic as alone, beginning, in the middle and the end. Also she learn to write the join letters and find where they are in the ayat. Lots of new learning for her instead of just know the meaning of couple of words, she learn a lots of writing and recognising joining letters. Although she learn to read with iqra system, but, Ad duha set books compile everything from pronunciation, reading, writing and meaning.

MS still on multiplication worksheet with maths. As multiplication is one of the important basic in maths, mindsprinting tutoring in the area is very deep. It's required lots of step lesson and review before the child can moved to the next topic. He kind of bored with the same topic, but find himself pretty much expert now in the area. Sometimes I step in and talk and motivate him about why the multiplication topic had to be in long run. His comprehension getting better. Mindsprinting comprehension teach them to read and understand the story with it's tricky question and answer. I stop him for a while in his English workbook as I need to sit and check them altogether before he can moved forward. He also did some science workbook from CGP which I bought them from car boot sale last Sunday. It's new and I got two workbook and three study book for £5. It's £3.50 each in the shop and it's never been used. Lots of bargain for homeschool alhamdulillah.

His Ad duha also had reach the revision page for what he been learning. Lots of practise of writing, knowing all the sign in the words and join writing. He loves it as others did. With iqra learning system and Ad duha together, they seems moving nicely in their quran reading together with understanding arabic and learn how to write in arabic as well. It's make my job more easy and less stress.

PS also had moved further in her Ad duha book. She also moved further on her Maths. I need to gibe her more time and attention on her English. She did lots of workbook but I didn't get a chance to look at it all the time. She now got couple of project which if Geography and D&T. Slowly I should be able to give more attention on organising things with her more like an adult. At the moment as she gather with her sibling, she seems playing with a resource and tools and project which is more for small children. All around she learn a lots as she can study on her own with her study book.

Overall, slowly I climb the step. As I said before, uninterrupted situation that we got now being used as much as we can. We get on with our homeschool, we seems t be back on track and get the rhythm now. Last night I can spent some times to start organising a chores for children. Just like we had before in The Rectory before we looking and in chaos to moved house. From today, all of them should have their own responsibility around the house which will help me a lots. They do help a lots but with out schedule, it's chaos. It's just shouting, calling them all the time and at the end leave all of us stress. It was nice and plan when they small, but it's seems a chaos when they big as I can't have a plan and routine in my head only. I found out that children need to see what they need to do and been told what ahead. I found some sheet from homeschool helper about chores and also meal planning. Inspired by The imam daughter blog, I know that I had to moved my self and get organise because chaos get in to me! Also, I'm already made a meal planner for next week. Now I need to do a shopping list for what I need for next weeks!

I don't want any more chaos of what to cook on that day. Especially in winter, I don't have much time and feel like rushing altogether. Also as hubby back home just before 5pm. I don't like being i chaos and mad house when he reach home. I need and want everything calm and organise and he come back in to home sweet home. I want to finish homeschool by the time he back home and also I finish sort out all my paperwork and worksheet. So, hubby and than sit in front of the net and I can than having a rest and enjoy the rest of the day.

I miss the time when everything organise. It's make my live more easy and we all left with no stress about homeschool. I will and try to make this happen slowly but sure. Now as we settle down in this house, I can rest on that and start to organise and get into routine. As children getting bigger, without organising and plan ahead will left them in chaos and stress. I remember in TJ web, how a muslim house hold should be nice, clean, organise and calm. And that's what I love and none of them can happen if I don't take the step. As a mum and wife, I believe that I'm the centre of the house and my step is an important step. Especially with homeschool and grown up children. I do need to take one step ahead, at one time and work it through. I believe it will benefits us all, Insya Allah.

Homeschool, mindsprinting and ad duha; in picture

Been busy as usual with homeschool. As the day getting shorter and colder, I was hibernating most of the time. We gather in the lounge all the time while we homeschool as it keep us warm with fire heat.

We moving fast on Ad Duha book with arabic lesson, writing and pronounciation. We also moving faster on mindsprinting. I was thinking if we can moved further on minds printing, than we might take a day or two off sometimes and focus on fun learning and may be do some lap book and project. I haven't been able to d that as I was busy catching them up on their learning which need to focus on. I really wanted to do some fun learning and project with them, but time is messing at the moment for me in winter. Hopefully we will be sometimes. Got some more picture of PS project and lap book. Will post it later.
