Istiqamah

One thing that I do had a problem from time to time...and had to push myself hard and the only things that I am always worries..Istiqamah. To learn, to act the first, second and third is easy, but to istiqamah and maintain is the one that struggle and hard to look after. Which is why, I don't like to put much expectation, reading too much of a theory, as reality in life is somewhat different. I don't like burn out. If I cannot istiqamah or maintain, I try to make sure I got a valid reason for that as much as I can.

As I know my weakness, I try to to over do things. Well, I know my capability in some way. I know how far I can go in doing things and how far I can push myself into. On certain things that not every day routine. But, when it comes to every day routine, I like to try the best to maintain, therefore...I don't like to overdo it...Although I do find it motivate and somewhat of stress seeing or reading others do things that I wanted to do...but no...I do what I find best for my family...and I am the most important person in the family. I am the back bone, therefore it's not worth me stress and burn out..something I had to try not to..But, also not good if I am a bit lay back and not istiqamah..

Therefore I am trying so hard to maintain the schedule. Although it wasn't actually on the dot and the time that we should, but I do make sure we are in the time frame roughly. For example, according to my schedule, they should awake and start tidy up at around 8-8.30 am. But, this can goes up to 9am. Just to give them a bit more time. As long as by 9.45 am, everyone already tidy their bed, sort out themselves and have breakfast and tidy the breakfast and start their quran reading. The most allowance time is 10 am. Only yesterday we seems a bit late , pass 10, usually either at 9.45 am or even at 9.30 am. As they get used to, they already been awake by around 8-9 am anyway. Although still some time I had to shout and scream at them to wake up. Honestly sometimes I don't bother to go up stairs and to their room and wake them up. usually the boy will heard me and AS will go and knock his sisters room.

Alhamdulillah it has been three weeks since we on my schedule homeschool which I hope and intend to keep with it, Insya Allah. I start to have many enquiry about my business, but manage to hold it at the moment. I had to keep my priority on top even though at the same time, I do need some extra financial help if I can keep my business as well. But, I rather squeeze at some point to keep the homeschool and house in order.

Alhamdulillah it wasn't hard to keep the kids on track. PS as usual with her online school, which we actually decide that she will be moved to another online school after half term. Well, another story actually. First college is ok, a nice small online school. But, rather the owner who is also the headteacher and her husband is also doing many other things such as bed and breakfast business. This had of course having some impact toward the kids especially for the class which on exam year. Therefore after PS discussion with her schoolmate, as one by one are moving, we think that she should as well. The other one will be a bit more expensive, but never mind. Money is not everything. But, the new one will have school on five days a week instead of four days as now. Therefore it's worth the money in some way. I had already register her on the new one. we had been dragging to do this since last term, but PS wasn't sure much. She had learn a lots from First college, I cannot deny that. They had teach her and make her better in term of learning in this past year. But, I think they didn't grasp the capability of some student. Especially student who are homeschool intend to be learning faster than the kids that in school. The other one seems better and more organise as well.

For the other three, I am still planning their work. Also at some point, I just had some plan in my head and we just get into it while we going. Well, I usually make sure I prepare a night before at least. For Maths is not a problem at all for three of them. English at the moment is the create the interest. Seems it going on well. MS had started on his second essay. S and As on their first. But, AS got mindsprinting almost every day. S also got some comprehension in between. I am looking to combine English part with the other subject. At the moment we had done geography for couple of lesson. Once I get going, I think it's better as I know where to continue and how to plan here and there. Therefore if I made a plan before it might be a waste, as I will than will find some of the things need to be change and twist. So, planning on some subject while I going, is better for us, I think. Also now, I can combine MS and S on Geography, Science and History.

History is not our favourite part due to many untold and different told in the curriculum itself. Therefore I will had to subject to Horrible history which I had big package of that which I bought in car boot sale for £20. Yes, a whole set of it including poster and lots of other things. Kids always watch Horrible histories from time to time. Their favourite TV program. So, they knew better than me, much much better than me. They can also explain to me on who, when and what. Only that I have to find the way to document this and help them to explain things in History through writing.

I had many of science reference and tools for experiment. I had to study more and to do a bit more research to see how I can get the plan done. The worst thing is I am so fussy...ha..ha..this is one of the problem for my planning. I want to make sure I cover everything needed, but in simple way, can pull everybody interest and etc, I had to bear in mind also, that kids including eight years old AS had so much information about Science from documentary, how things work and many kids science program in TV. That is what our TV work for. Science, History and Geography. They can sit and teach me a whole lots of things and information. Including from you tube as well. The lesson than will be sort of pretty much they teaching me and I will just provide the material for them to document and teach them how to put things in paper such as graph, chart, writing report through experiment and etc.

Overall, I do felt grateful for our istiqamah and I know many things can still and need to be done.

On Islamic studies we start to touch several topic. As usual, fiqh is an important topic for me to revise and discuss with kids. Our first lesson is concentrate on what fiqh is. How Fiqh derive from the commandment of Allah through quran and hadith. How important for us to learn fiqh to ensure what we doing is within halal and haram. What valid and what invalid. Also we discuss about how mazhab derive, how important for us and why important for us to keep on tract of the mazhab although if we go and learn in madrasah, we become alim and alimah, still we cannot do ijtihad to pick and choose. We not going to have the tawqa as the four imam especially with extensive experience and the time they live is near to the time of the Prophet than any other scholars now a day. Therefore it's important also to know how the fiqh that we learn from the quran and hadith came from. From the Prophet, the Sahabah, Tabiin, mujtahid, alim and ulamak. Although we can read and understand arabic fluently, that is not a case at all to pick and choose and interpreted the Quran and the Hadith ourself. Pick and choose on our own as many knowledge now a days had drag people into this issue which I am always put stress in my kids. It's important for us to trust the mujtahid, the alim and ulamak than ourself in this issue. As our nafs is high and our taqwa is not as high as them. A very important issue for me that I do discuss with kids before but a bit more deeply now.

We also start to talk about Hajj. Play with Hajj game as well. I was planning to get them to make a map of Hajj ritual, Insya Allah. Something that we will try to work together. I remember, kids had assembly in school when they were small. During Hajj time, one class will be doing assembly about Hajj, (yes, this is public school) they will make a kaabah and kids will do assembly about tawaf and wearing ihram and etc. It's lovely! I was thinking of doing similar thing!

I am very please with the istiqamah that we had with our routine. Once this become a habit, I am going to start to introduce rules in our daily life and routine Insya Allah. I am trying to bring our daily routine into something that please Allah swt and the way that our house should be, to become a madrasah. Not just in term of learning and teaching, but in practical life. Our iman and amal. This is my target. Insya Allah.

I know one family who homeschool all their three kids. One of them already married with five kids, now living in US. The second daughter now doing degree in Maths. The first one also done degree in Maths. Both done and doing it from Open University. The third daughter is doing A level. All their sons , three of them I think , two is hifz and Alim, teaching in madrasah. The best thing is, the mum not really teach them. They all took distance learning as the whole curriculum. So the mum concentrate on other things. The second one which currently doing degree in Maths, is excellent. Well, so do the eldest one who already married. I lost speech. But, looking at the second one also, it's like my dream daughter. She the one who cook, clean, sort out the other siblings and etc if the mum not around. Even with the mum around, she the on who do all the cooking now. She not just make lovely food, but also they serve guests around 100+ during first day on eid, every time! She make everything from dessert, homemade snack and meal! Imagine! Subhana Allah...plus...all the daughter had so much fikir on deen.....Since age eleven after primary school, they all wear full black abaya and nikab! Yes, full with gloves, Subhana Allah....They had high manners and know every expect of deen. of course their mum is also strong in jamaat. Jamaat going in and out from the house from time to time. They been in jamaat, mum went in jamaat from time to time. And they live according to what need to be done to bring deen into their house. They life in iman and amal in their routine and living....What a nice things to see...

I always stop by their house when ever I went to Newcastle.

One day I stop by, one of the son is there for dinner. before he went out to masjeed, he said to his mum, "Jazaka Allah Huhairan mum for the food, Make doa for me..."

I was like..wow.! He live just around the corner. But when you hear how he talk to his mum..Subhana Allah....Not just a hifz and alim, because knowledge now a day can be done as an info. But, when it come with manners and excellent behaviour...it's just great and complete way of life. Subhana Allah...the mum is an excellent great pious woman. They had to settle in UK after the husband finish PhD on the mesyuarat from Nizamuddin. I think I did mention this story before. Just that I cannot help from sharing about them from time to time...Just what a great family to be shown as example....They manage to produce not just homeschool daughters, (daughters are not easy to be brought up), but with degree and deen. I had meet the one who now live in US. She will be coming back for holiday next months and I cannot wait to meet her again. She got five kids also homeschool them. The best thing to look at is having not just a degree in one of difficult subject, Maths, but also someone who had been look after their aurah since puberty with full nikab. Something that I wish I can...Insya Allah...I know that what the parents had done is just bring what we learn and routine we lay while we are in jamaat in the house. In other word, bring the iman and amal we learn into practise....And the effect and end is excellent result not just for duniya, but hereafter...May Allah give me strength. Insya Allah.

Online School

When I first start homeschool my kids, I did had a look into online school. It was quiet interesting for me as he age gap of the kids giving forcing me into research way too much until I think the time used is good if kids actually learning. But, of course research is very important. To get to know the way, which and what and also to getting it on with kids learning style.

PS is so quick in learning new things. She can focus in new topic quickly, organise her work an so motivated in learning if she had target and well planned learning to get on with. She can be very unmotivated, lazy and horrible without proper plan. And as she learn things quic, she can just get on with things in matters of hours or days.

And she now working towards exam, she do need serious learning. I don't actually find something that complete which interest me and something I think worth the money for us. I did go through Oxford Homeschool curriculum and think it was quiet good for her and she can start to work on her own and getting it on with it while I just monitor her regularly. But, I still did not satisfied and still thinking about it from time to time and cannot make decision.

As my home base business getting bigger, alhamdulillah, I be able to spend some extra money for kids education. I had so many workbook, I had couple of subscription for online website as well. But, pick and choose is not work with PS, I reckon. She cannot focus on it as much as she can actually do.

So, I start to make research again and after read about First College, I found it very interesting. Especially of their flexibility for us to get our deposit back with one month notice and also trial session. Which we can paid the deposit and one month payment and if we not satisfied, we don't have to give a month notice, we can tell them after one month trial, we don't like it and we can have our deposit back. So, I though these people do serious thing. Not juts making money website. I am also interested as they do IGCSE which is much better than GCSE. They also had compulsory subject an option subject. They also don't have a class for certain age or year but only three class divided into First Class, Senior and scholars. And after having a chat with the teacher which also a head teacher wife and co owner of the school, I found that we had quiet similarity in education theory. They also homeschool their sons who had finish IGCSE with A ans A+. I don't bother much about A result but because they do concentrate also in social skill and behaviour which one of the compulsory subject called: Philosophy and Society.

So, I decided to try PS on this. The school start at 9.30 am and finish at 2pm. They had break in between and they had actually only 3 subject perday which is each subject is one hour teaching. Usually they communicate by software similar to pal talk and there are some occasion teacher can also speak to the student, so do the student. Student can also had discussion with other student. They also had group project and daily homework.

Of course , PS who always wake up as early as 10am, now will sit in front of her lap top which I bought second hand for her at 8.45am -9am. She will ensure she get ready by that time and have breakfast and etc. She also make sure she get her homework done as it will need t be submitted by 12 every day. Class is Monday to Thursday. At the moment, I was thinking that Friday can be other things such as cooking lesson, her ICT and other subject. She will also had her islamic studies every day apart from her school. So, she will be busy which is what she really needed. She ia happy that she got plan well ahead for her to look forward to and full of motivation to work towards her exam, Masya Allah. Alhamdulillah.

She just started last Monday which is an introduction day. And she start her formal class on Tuesday. They will break up for summer holiday end of next week. So, we just paid £100 for deposit and £100 for 2 week lesson. They will back to school from 1 September 2010 and than I will start to pay £198 a month for 10 month. We don't pay for July and August when they break up.

She had English, Geography, Philosophy and Society, History, Double Science which consist of Chemistry, Physic and Biology as seperate exam paper, Maths and she also take Spanish. Today she had her second homework and she had to do assignment of 450 words.

I sit with her first lesson on and off and it was quiet interesting. Example for Maths: They learn about coordinate. They not just learn straight about coordinate in term of numbers, but learn first about where this coordinate start from, sort of history of coordinate and mapping. So, it was quiet interesting to see that, which is something I like as it was not just sudy for exam or study just to fill in the curriculum or subject, but teach other things that related and history about it. Plus the best things is I can monitor her closely and she learn from others but in our own house. She had friends similar situation and all this student is a pupil whichlooking forward to study and achieve. There are a muslim student as well. Most of student from England, but there are some from overseas. The school run from Wales.

So, alhamdulillah. My first target from my business is achieve. To be able to provide something needed for my kid. The second target is for MS to enter into Dewsbury Darul Ulum, Insya Allah after eid. We will go to Dewsbury either Friday or Saturday and Insya Allah hubby will have a discussion about this. I will need to spend sometimes with MS to catch up couple of things. He loking forward for it and I am also looking forward for it. I think it was something we all wanted and needed. Hubby satisfied with the behaviour of a student in term of dicipline, manners and behaviour. So do me. Especially after having one of the student during their one week break couple of months ago.

So, Insya Allah hopefully, after eid, I can than concentrate only on S and AS. Which they are now in need of attention from me. There so many things I wanted to accomplish with them but always big kids had to overshadow it because time is running out for them first and foremost. AS will soon in three and half year time follow MS footstep, (which I hope MS manage to stay, Insya Allah ) to become a hifd and 'alim and doing GCSE and A level at the same time, Insya Allah. AS of course looking forward for it! Pretty much. And I know my boys had to go for that. And as them both also looking forward to it, I do hope and pray, Insya Allah hope they succeed. S Insya Allah I'm looking forward for her to start with first college probably when she reach year 6. So, for the time being I can try to catch up properly with both S and AS as I had pretty much not been able to do that with PS and MS before.

I wasn't sure how is it going to work with MS at the moment. Hs's fine with going to Darul Ulom, but from my experience, when the kids start to moved towards education for hifd and alim in proper and formal way, it can be very challenging. Plus he will sooner or later enter into maturity as well. I can see not much fuss from both of my boys, but I believe test from Allah can always happen and usually it happen on the start, middle and end of the quran. I had to be patient and presevere and know that I need to make lots and lots of doa if I want to make both my sons a hifd and alim. It will be a big challenge in years to come. Sending to Darul Ulom, certainly will not be the end of my job, but the start of one of the biggest challenge. Hubby I think very happy to think and see his son of to Darul Ulom to study hifd and alim. And he did say to me, they need to learn that from proper teacher in proper environment which in some one I cannot provide unless we the parents are from the same background of hifd and alim. As we are not, than we had to make sacrfice. Insya Allah. But, as I say, I did make a safety net at the back of me, that he might ended up back home for some reason, or cannot go forward in hifd and start alim. Or cannot finish or do both. I did some discussion with MS and he pretty sure he want to do hifd and than alim. Because I was thinking if he want to just go straight to alim without doing hifd, but he insist he want to do hifd first doesn't matter of it's take a bit longer than usualy or more than 3-4 years. As a mum, of course I make doa, may Allah make everything easy, Insya Allah.

On other note, MS and S still getting on with their Conquer Maths. Some work book on other topic and AS was gettign on with his reading with little work book and writing at the moment. As I will be more busy in next couple of week with the arrival of three master chef from Malaysia, I know homeschool will be on hold for a while untill things get settle.

Holiday review

We are on homeschool holiday at the moment. First week nearly gone now. As my husband was away with jamaat in Holland, kids also got daughters friend sleep over here for a week. It's two of them and they had been a great company to PS.

I had a great rest and morning sleep as well. Lots of rest and away from homeschool routine. We still did our quran reading and ta'alim reading which we read fazail amal books and sahih bukhary adab al mufrad. As usual, these two is a read aloud session. For others who did ta'alim session at home will know how this is beneficial. Ta'alim session is a family halaqah which been done at home among family members everyday at the same place in the house and at the same time everyday. If we had guest, we will invite guest to sit together with us but man and woman will be in separate room them for non mahram.

Usually we rotate the reader among family members. It can be hubby, me or any of the kids to read it. Apart from it become a read aloud session, it also become a reading session for kids. But, the only book that we used is Fazail Amal and adab al mufrad. Both already got commentary and the benefit of amal and also adab al mufrat contain islamic manner we should learn and practice. This need to be done at the same place where we choose our lounge as the place we did our daily ta'alim. Also we did at the same time which is after magrib. But as the day keep getting longer. We probably will have to move it after asr for later time. Usually after praying maghrib, we will all sit next to each other and listen to the hadith. This is also the time where hubby or me will talk about deen with kids heart to heart and explain what need to in different different topic each day but usually it will stay in area about imaan and amal. About how we need to strive and steadfast in our religion, Allah and Rasul. Also kids will talk about their motivation to keep up with their amal after listening to the benefit of doing it from Fazail Amal. It's a routine which we all love and it's something that we need to keep each day as we need a family time to sit and talk about deen as a family.

I'm also started to browse resource of our homeschool. And I stumble into this site which I love it so much for islamic studies. I just can't believe how there are something there that I need and make my live easy. I don't have time to actually sit and arrange and planning my own curriculum and what next and next. As kids getting bigger by the day, I'm rushing up to fill them and spend time with them in teaching and not planning and researching and arranging area in each subject. I had used some of the book of the book before which I bought from Dewsbury. i find it very interesting and great in teaching islamic studies, but don't know that it's got a whole syllabus and curriculum. So, I had spend time since yesterday to print and make it into the book my self and ready to use. Some of the will be use straight away after our holiday and some will be use later, alhamdulillah. I'm so happy as the site is what I need.

A gift for the daughter of the ummah download book is so awesome as it teach girl what they need to know from the basic and from islamic point of view. I can't wait to start it with PS. Masya Allah..I really appreciate what these people had done. And of course as they are an expert in the area, the had made research and know what they doing. Their syllabus I find, excellent. So, looks like, islamic studies sort out for all the kids in term of resource. We now just need to get on with it as we got so much to do and look forward to. I'm also thinking to get AS more seriously into homeschooling in term of memorization of surah and dua. This is the time for him and I had to work hard with others as their brain now is tougher then before. I know that I will facing hardship after this as I'm now going to start regime homeschool on islamic studies area. Although we had quran reading, any islamic studies subject a day which can be fikh, tauhid, arabic/tajweed and seerah, I will then arrange more time for kids to spend in islamic studies and more memorization time now. As they seems stable with their Maths and other academic subject, now we just need to maintain their position and improving further and learning new things is not a big deal anymore.

I know that i will hear the whinge from kids, but I'm also confident that they do understand fully that this is the only time for them to gain what ever they need to. I'm not being regime as to make them brilliant or cleaver academically or even to reach higher level in their islamic knowledge. But, to learn the essential islam and to bring into practice will need hardship. And we will go through this together. I think this two weeks break will indeed freshen us and once we get back on our homeschool routine, Insya Allah we ready to concentrate.

This break also give me time to sit, relax, ponder, think and tidy up, spring cleaning and whatever it needs. It's not just freshen my mind, but also the house and surrounding area. Also kids get to have freedom time and lots of play and running around especially with PS that had friends over. Every time she had friends over or she been to someone house which in secondary school, she found out that she had learn lots or more then them and it's surprise her how homeschool had gain her more knowledge in theory and practically. Alhamdulillah, we all need a break we will be ready to start on our regime homeschool after a week time.

Miss calculation

I had miss calculate the public school and Easter break. And as the reason why I need to have our homeschool break same as public school, we then had to go back to our homeschool routine next week. I thought I'm gonna feel miserable as I'm already put away everything from where we study, but as when I realise y mistake I just wake up from late afternoon nap, I feel motivated! Hemmm...

As hubby also not at home this weekend, I take this opportunity to had plenty rest and printing everything needed for the whole of next week. As hubby will had a day off on Monday, he will had laptop to himself and we also need to catch up with shopping of halal meat in New castle. I'm also looking forward to actually do another a week of homeschool as I am in the middle of enjoying the learning that we had.

MS and PS is on the way into learning basic knowledge of one by one country in Asia. Before we learn about Continent, mapping, globe, why geography important, landforms and lots about geography and now as we go deeper in each continent and by country as well. We now start with Asia. We had cover Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and will do Vietnam and China before we had school break. All this be cover from basic country geography, history and culture. At least kids will get some knowledge when others talk about it or they meet someone from each particular country. They at least can imagine what the country looks like, where the country are, the basic weather there, economy and culture. This to ensure better understanding towards others as well.

All the information I got from ed helper which also then cover History subject as well for each particular country. We then got map and flag from enchanted learning. S also start to cover topic as map, why geography important, basic continent and ocean, Malaysia as our home country, also about world community and places such as what is town, village, city and etc. US curriculum on this given deep knowledge that for particular child level.

AS homeschool getting a bit slow down as he had catch a lots for his level. I just started to do multiplication with him now and also problem solving which had put interest on him as it's new topic. As he learn things quickly, he become bored with the same thing all the time. He also started to do Maths with two digit add two digit as one digit will be bored for him. I will also start subtraction with two digit after homeschool break with him. his reading of course is something no need to be worries. Staff in the library had impress how he know so much for his age and they help him to get more comic book of sponge bob. He also know which book need to choose to ensure he can finish them. Science also we had cover topic such as growing plant, alive or not, basic five sense and material such as metal, wood, glass and plastic. Alhamdulillah he get in with all this as easy as A,B,C. We had finish first level of iqra foundation workbook before. I'm now going to get the second one and hopefully can start doing it with him after homeschool break. Habil and Qabil

I had taken out variety of muslim reading book for children while I was cleaning our library room which not finish yet till today! I was thinking that may be around end of March or early April, we can start using our library as our classroom back again as the weather should be getting warm than before.

One of the book was the story of Habil and Qabil. As a reader now, AS start to take the book and read. He can read with little hlep through out the book, alhamdulillah. At the end, there are a note, in small print saying ask the reader to refer the story about habil and qabil in the quran.

AS than straight away get the qurna and bring it down to me. I was bisy with hubby in front of laptop and at the sam time, tell him that I can't find it from the qurna and I ahd to used quran translation. Not qurna in Arabic. He than keep saying to me, he need to find a reference in the quran about Habil and Qabil as been told in the book he read.

I ask him to get me qurna translation in english and Malay. I can't find specific translation regard to the story until in the afternoon while I was getting on with my quran translation reading page by page for my own reason, I found it. Quickly I call him and read to him the verses and than he open his story book and try to understand from what I read. He than keep reading againa nd again the story about Habil and Qabil and feel satisfied that he can refer to the quran as he been ask at the end of the book.

Alhamdulillah, at the moment, this is what I love my kids to be. To be a learner all the time and to be independent learner and love learning without forcing by anybody. But, of course the method I used with AS cannot apply to the others. When they getting bigger, although they can all be independent learner, but to keep them motivated is different thing and not easy. That deserve post on it's own. At the moment, AS as usual, gain more and more day by day and at the same time, get a freedom that he want as a child. Running, jumoing, screaming, making mess with toys and his thing is normal to me. I don't expect him to sit with me all the time or holding the book and sit quoetly the whole day. I will be worried if that happen. I love to see my kids jumping, screaming and behave like a kid and I know that they develop with a normal phase and not miss or jump and left what they need to go though.
