I've been in long hiatus with this blog, unfortunately. Sometimes it seems that I don't have time for it or what, not so sure. Don't feel like writing most of the time. But at the same time feel exciting about writing but no so as well. Probably we are on our swing home schooling. Pretty much so for all this year, I reckon.
By the way, PS had started back on her Online school with First College just after eid on 13 of September 2010. Others also back on Conquer Maths now and again. Also on workbook. Our library is full with my business stock at the moment, so we just squeeze in family room as usual. PS usually sit in the lounge by her self as she need full concentration. She getting on so well and learning style and homework needed to be done is really good. I like the learning style they had as it's totally different than school although the target is GCSE. She also had friends who live around the globe, Thailand, China, UK, Europe and other part of the world. So, it was excellent as they share the experience and background. I am so please with what going on, alhamdulillah. It was worth the money.
MS is waiting to go to Darul Ulom. But, we had to wait as we had some plan before we send him off. We need to go back to Malaysia to sort out PS and MS identity card and to sort out several other things. But, as we not sure when, but probably this year, we put MS entrance on hold until we sort everything out. We also looking and planning for a gap year, so to say. Probably travel somewhere and live somewhere in middle east for couple of month to learn arabic and for kids to gain experience. But, we not so sure how to do this at the moment. And what lay in this next couple of weeks and months. PS settle as she can continue her class when ever she is as long as we can get her internet connection. So, that's sort out for her. AS and S not in worries position. S had catch up well on Conquer maths, so do MS. AS also catching up in his way. He improves a lots in his own, despite me on yo yo homeschool.
So, homeschool never actually stop here although this blog was quiet for a while. It's just I don't have certainty at the moment with kids and our journey. Only PS now, had certain and proper routine and on track. She start school at 9.30am and finish at 2pm. Than she will be send homework and need to submit before 12midnight. So, she sort of busy whole day except she got day off Friday as her school only 4 days a week. I probably get MS on that as well if we take decision to move and take a gap year for the whole family.
That is what going on with our homeschool at the moment. May I be able to come back and write here. Insya Allah.
Welcome to our homeschool blog. We will share our day to day routine and experience as we go along teaching and learning.

Online School
When I first start homeschool my kids, I did had a look into online school. It was quiet interesting for me as he age gap of the kids giving forcing me into research way too much until I think the time used is good if kids actually learning. But, of course research is very important. To get to know the way, which and what and also to getting it on with kids learning style.
PS is so quick in learning new things. She can focus in new topic quickly, organise her work an so motivated in learning if she had target and well planned learning to get on with. She can be very unmotivated, lazy and horrible without proper plan. And as she learn things quic, she can just get on with things in matters of hours or days.
And she now working towards exam, she do need serious learning. I don't actually find something that complete which interest me and something I think worth the money for us. I did go through Oxford Homeschool curriculum and think it was quiet good for her and she can start to work on her own and getting it on with it while I just monitor her regularly. But, I still did not satisfied and still thinking about it from time to time and cannot make decision.
As my home base business getting bigger, alhamdulillah, I be able to spend some extra money for kids education. I had so many workbook, I had couple of subscription for online website as well. But, pick and choose is not work with PS, I reckon. She cannot focus on it as much as she can actually do.
So, I start to make research again and after read about First College, I found it very interesting. Especially of their flexibility for us to get our deposit back with one month notice and also trial session. Which we can paid the deposit and one month payment and if we not satisfied, we don't have to give a month notice, we can tell them after one month trial, we don't like it and we can have our deposit back. So, I though these people do serious thing. Not juts making money website. I am also interested as they do IGCSE which is much better than GCSE. They also had compulsory subject an option subject. They also don't have a class for certain age or year but only three class divided into First Class, Senior and scholars. And after having a chat with the teacher which also a head teacher wife and co owner of the school, I found that we had quiet similarity in education theory. They also homeschool their sons who had finish IGCSE with A ans A+. I don't bother much about A result but because they do concentrate also in social skill and behaviour which one of the compulsory subject called: Philosophy and Society.
So, I decided to try PS on this. The school start at 9.30 am and finish at 2pm. They had break in between and they had actually only 3 subject perday which is each subject is one hour teaching. Usually they communicate by software similar to pal talk and there are some occasion teacher can also speak to the student, so do the student. Student can also had discussion with other student. They also had group project and daily homework.
Of course , PS who always wake up as early as 10am, now will sit in front of her lap top which I bought second hand for her at 8.45am -9am. She will ensure she get ready by that time and have breakfast and etc. She also make sure she get her homework done as it will need t be submitted by 12 every day. Class is Monday to Thursday. At the moment, I was thinking that Friday can be other things such as cooking lesson, her ICT and other subject. She will also had her islamic studies every day apart from her school. So, she will be busy which is what she really needed. She ia happy that she got plan well ahead for her to look forward to and full of motivation to work towards her exam, Masya Allah. Alhamdulillah.
She just started last Monday which is an introduction day. And she start her formal class on Tuesday. They will break up for summer holiday end of next week. So, we just paid £100 for deposit and £100 for 2 week lesson. They will back to school from 1 September 2010 and than I will start to pay £198 a month for 10 month. We don't pay for July and August when they break up.
She had English, Geography, Philosophy and Society, History, Double Science which consist of Chemistry, Physic and Biology as seperate exam paper, Maths and she also take Spanish. Today she had her second homework and she had to do assignment of 450 words.
I sit with her first lesson on and off and it was quiet interesting. Example for Maths: They learn about coordinate. They not just learn straight about coordinate in term of numbers, but learn first about where this coordinate start from, sort of history of coordinate and mapping. So, it was quiet interesting to see that, which is something I like as it was not just sudy for exam or study just to fill in the curriculum or subject, but teach other things that related and history about it. Plus the best things is I can monitor her closely and she learn from others but in our own house. She had friends similar situation and all this student is a pupil whichlooking forward to study and achieve. There are a muslim student as well. Most of student from England, but there are some from overseas. The school run from Wales.
So, alhamdulillah. My first target from my business is achieve. To be able to provide something needed for my kid. The second target is for MS to enter into Dewsbury Darul Ulum, Insya Allah after eid. We will go to Dewsbury either Friday or Saturday and Insya Allah hubby will have a discussion about this. I will need to spend sometimes with MS to catch up couple of things. He loking forward for it and I am also looking forward for it. I think it was something we all wanted and needed. Hubby satisfied with the behaviour of a student in term of dicipline, manners and behaviour. So do me. Especially after having one of the student during their one week break couple of months ago.
So, Insya Allah hopefully, after eid, I can than concentrate only on S and AS. Which they are now in need of attention from me. There so many things I wanted to accomplish with them but always big kids had to overshadow it because time is running out for them first and foremost. AS will soon in three and half year time follow MS footstep, (which I hope MS manage to stay, Insya Allah ) to become a hifd and 'alim and doing GCSE and A level at the same time, Insya Allah. AS of course looking forward for it! Pretty much. And I know my boys had to go for that. And as them both also looking forward to it, I do hope and pray, Insya Allah hope they succeed. S Insya Allah I'm looking forward for her to start with first college probably when she reach year 6. So, for the time being I can try to catch up properly with both S and AS as I had pretty much not been able to do that with PS and MS before.
I wasn't sure how is it going to work with MS at the moment. Hs's fine with going to Darul Ulom, but from my experience, when the kids start to moved towards education for hifd and alim in proper and formal way, it can be very challenging. Plus he will sooner or later enter into maturity as well. I can see not much fuss from both of my boys, but I believe test from Allah can always happen and usually it happen on the start, middle and end of the quran. I had to be patient and presevere and know that I need to make lots and lots of doa if I want to make both my sons a hifd and alim. It will be a big challenge in years to come. Sending to Darul Ulom, certainly will not be the end of my job, but the start of one of the biggest challenge. Hubby I think very happy to think and see his son of to Darul Ulom to study hifd and alim. And he did say to me, they need to learn that from proper teacher in proper environment which in some one I cannot provide unless we the parents are from the same background of hifd and alim. As we are not, than we had to make sacrfice. Insya Allah. But, as I say, I did make a safety net at the back of me, that he might ended up back home for some reason, or cannot go forward in hifd and start alim. Or cannot finish or do both. I did some discussion with MS and he pretty sure he want to do hifd and than alim. Because I was thinking if he want to just go straight to alim without doing hifd, but he insist he want to do hifd first doesn't matter of it's take a bit longer than usualy or more than 3-4 years. As a mum, of course I make doa, may Allah make everything easy, Insya Allah.
On other note, MS and S still getting on with their Conquer Maths. Some work book on other topic and AS was gettign on with his reading with little work book and writing at the moment. As I will be more busy in next couple of week with the arrival of three master chef from Malaysia, I know homeschool will be on hold for a while untill things get settle.

The differences
Education..education..education. Whenever me and hubby try to actually talk about education, it will never ending with happy face. We had so much differences ever since we first married and when we not even had kids yet. Every time we touch this topic, hubby will say that I am sensitive whenever we talk about this topic and I think probably lots of other people also think that I might have strong opinion on education like I know them all.
Suddenly, I just realise...I am just difference than lots of others. And of course usually our opinion and the way we thinking is a reflection from where we come from, our background and importantly what we been experience before. Experience is the strongest link with how we think, feel and put our voice and opinion.
So, I sit and sum up:
Hubby education background is just simple like any other common people. He didn't go to kindergarten. He start off with year one or so called standard one in Malaysia and finish primary school at standard 6 and went to secondary school from form 1 as we call in Malaysia and finish at form 5 age 17+. Than went to Uni, done his diploma of mechanical engineering, and than work and done his diploma of education and start teaching in Polytechnic and married and came to England and get his degree and master degree.
So, in a way his primary and secondary education is just straight forward like most people. He only experience one type of Education during primary and secondary which is government public day school.
How about me:
I went to kindergarten. Kind off English type of nursery. We read fairy tales, draw Cinderella and snow white and teacher do speak English. Than I went to the best of Primary school where we live and I was in the best class which is A class since standard one until six. Never actually work hard but I was in school from 7.30 am to 1.30pm. Than back home for lunch time and off to quran reading from 2/2.30pm until 5.30pm. than usually off to tuition from 7pm to 9pm. That's what I have for 6 years.
Than in secondary my parents send me off to private Islamic school belong to ex Malaysian Prime minister Abdullah Badawi grandfather in Penang. I was thirteen at that time. This school teach only arabic and Islamic studied using arabic as a first language. There's no canteen or cafe and I stay in boarding and had to cook by my self using old fuel cooker style. The boarding building is lovely with 2 people in each room with complete bed, wardrobe and study table for each person. Big nice kitchen for everybody with kitchen cabinet and nearby shop where we can buy some meat, vegetable and other dry things. So, look back I start to shop and cook at the age of 13 without any adult help. Lots of people that study there age 15 above and few my age. Class is mix according to when we start, not by age. So, I had classmate age 15, 17 and etc. I stay there for around 6 months. I do learn a lots of things there and sometimes weekend nearly whole building where we stay was empty as lots of people stay nearby go home and as I was quiet far from home, I am not normally go home every weekend.
From there my parents than take me out and send me to government public girl only school. Still it was far from home, so I stay in boarding. And as lots of other boarding school, I had experience bullying style when you first get into the boarding and is among the younger group in the school.
So, that was two different experience in one year. One in private only Islamic study school, no academic and the other one is government public school with tight schedule and rules without any islamic studies except basic. Which means we learn Islamic studies but no arabic, deep into hadith and etc.
Around 4 months there, I than been moved to another private school not far from my house, about 20 minutes drive but still I stay in boarding. This school got both Islamic studies and academic. Islamic studies contain fikh, tauhid, islamic history, hadith, 3 subject of arabic language including writing, reading, grammar and comprehension. Also we had range of other academic subject of maths, malay language, science, geography, history, economy, English. Because over there there are foundation year, mean I will be backward one year than my other cousin and friends that I know. As there are change in curriculum at that time, me and couple of friends there decided to take exam one year than we should be with school privately, so we can take it same as our friends who do not have to go through foundation in other school.
My parents got me a distance learning for the exam I wanted to take. At the same time, I still continue my study with the school and stay boarding. After nearly 1 1/2 year, and time for my private exam is near, I pull my self from school and attended private tuition for couple of months and still go to school as well at the same time. I quit from school before exam and take exam and pass with quiet flying colour. I was 15 at that time and this is when my parents decided for me to just stay home and take another important exam, o level. I don't actually like to stay home and get distance learning as I love company. My parents didn't actually bother about exam, but willing to provide any distance learning as money is not a problem for us.
I had no help or motivation from others. I don't have computer at that time at home even we have it before when my father office is at home and I used with computer since age of 7/8. But, as office move and we move, I don't have access with computer, only sometimes at my cousin house. I love motivation book. I made my own spider web for my learning without realise about the learning style. I stick lots of my spiderweb style info on the wall. My room fill with data for my study. I had my target achievement stick on the wall as well. I learn to story on my own. Buy revision book, past paper and go though books on my own. Got feedback from my tutor if I send them assignment. Otherwise I am on my own. Distance learning I take usually for people who actually taken the exam for second time.
I went to register the exam with my own will and without any help from any adult. Just all the things I do for my study and exam and the whole of my homeschool process is on me. Alhamdulillah I pass my exam with quiet good consider I did waste lots of time. I should continue with diploma but wanted to go through another exam for sixth form. And get married before the exam and did take the exam though! I did work in nursery for a while before married.
So, that is my education journey and look back I've been to public school, private boarding school, public boarding school with full islamic studies and both islamic and academic studies. May be I didn't experience University environment, but I did go through some Uni level studies with open University couple of years back and did various other courses.
I am also was a stay home mum with one and than two and than three kids. Than start working part time with three kids, and than work full time worth three kids and than four kids. And now stay home mum and homeschooling with four kids. I think experience say it all.
This is why sometimes or maybe most for the time, when people talk about their experience and give their opinion, I can easily interrupt but do have my own strong opinion mostly if the person just like hubby, going to straight and one line journey during education. Not me. Talking about school, been there. Talking about private school, been there. Boarding school, been there, private and public. Islamic only school, been there. Mix education style of islamic and academic, been there. Homeschooling and taking 2 big exam as a homeschooler, been there. Stay home mum with one, two and three kids, been there. Work part time and full time with three and than four kids, been there. Stay home mum with four kids and home educate, been there and still there.
And of course one of the big difference between me and hubby as I am the eldest who had to look up my other sibling, noticing any problem occur around family and hubby being the number five, in the middle out of ten, of course experience less responsibility taken. Probably been given too much at some point in a way as his gap with his younger brother is 4 years, while I had four other brother and sister although the gap between me and the one younger than me is 6 years because I had one brother died after 7 days born.
For me experience is better tale than books or theory. We can simply talk about what we think and give opinion from what we read and see or observe, but experience it all our self can give a big impact towards how we think and how we see things.
After sit and reflect upon my own education journey, I suddenly see why I got so much differences from others. While most people either go through straight forward journey either school or homeschool, or mix half and half, I went though a lots of corners along the way and lots of stop by and transit which teach me a lots and change the way I am thinking and the way I see what education is and why there are things I am worried and other not and others worried and I am not.
Education for me is one big picture with lots of corner, hurdle, gates and rewards. The most important rewards is experience. And what am I thinking? I am thinking if we had a chance this year to go back for holiday to Malaysia, I will send PS and MS for probably two or three weeks into private boarding school where they will have to wash their own clothes using their bare hand. Only to give them some experience and I believe that short time will teach them a lots and change the way they think and they way they see things. I do feel pretty happy that I am be able to give my kids experience similar to what I had. Probably will also send AS and S to private day school when we go back for one or two weeks. They all had been to school here. Although AS might not be fully in school, but he had been in private nursery when I used to work for more than a year from 8am to 6pm. I want my kids to explore and experience a different type of education system which will give them whole lots of other important experience.
Hubby said that all other people in jamaat whose went with him to Bosnia, says that they shock look hubby was clothes with hand and dry it by twisting the clothes tightly. They said to hubby, they cannot do that. They all need to find laundry to wash their clothes. I bought hubby a tiny bottle of washing liquid for clothes. All other people were born and brought up in UK.
I was thinking about his story and than said, " How about our kids?".
Our kids never wash clothes by hand. PS did wash her own bag and shoes but not clothes. I am not wanted to take one day to teach kids how to wash clothes by hand. I know it's like not important as we going all techno geek this days and we 'might' not needed to learn this? I think it's a no no for me. I think I will need to list down important things on how we do things before without all this technology. I was homeschool without any computer. With limited books and no tutor or help from adult. I manage to pass through 2 big exam, SRP (not PMR) and SPM. It make big different in my life, not the exam but the journey along the way. Experience make a big difference, just think before you give a birth naturally and after you give the birth. Even doctor who learn about this, tell different things before the experience and after.
Suddenly, I just realise...I am just difference than lots of others. And of course usually our opinion and the way we thinking is a reflection from where we come from, our background and importantly what we been experience before.
